New Horizons at Pluto

In July 2015 the New
Horizons spacecraft - with my name on it (!) reached Pluto and its
moons ... but did it actually encounter a planet? In
2006 the International
Astronomical Union voted to re-classify Pluto as a Dwarf Planet,
creating a constroversy that still continbues. But does it need
to? Is there not a simple answer? In an entertaining
presentation, "Is Pluto A
Planet?" looks at the IAU definition of a planet and some of its

NASA's latest Mars probe - MAVEN - was launched in November 2013 and reached the Red Planet in September 2014.
Like many other spacecraft it is carrying my name - coded on a DVD fitted to the spacecraft. However there is a bonus, as the DVD also includes a poem that I wrote about our exploration of Mars.
That makes me an interplanetary poet!
I was interviewed about the mission - and my poem - on Sky News by Dermot Murnaghan.
I did another interview with Dermot in September 2015 about NASA's announcement about evidence for liquid water on Mars.
I
was also interviewed on Sky News in March,
covering the European Space Agency's ExoMars 2016 mission. Two
spacecraft were launched to reach the Red Planet in October. The
orbiter is now circling the planet; the demonstration lander
crashed, though not before sucessfully
obtaining all its intended data from its passage through the Martian
atmosphere.
